Abandoned, Junked, and Salvaged Vehicle Questions

1. When I add a vehicle to the system, and the vehicle data is pre-populated from VINA, I received a message from NMVTIS that the vehicle is junked, salvage, or prior salvage. What should I do?

   Make sure you are processing the proper title transaction for the designation (s) returned. If the designation is not part of the title such as Junking (a.k.a. Non-Repairable) or Salvage, a designation (brand) will need to be added in Vehicle Maintenance.

2. How are abandoned vehicles processed?

   After an abandoned vehicle is towed from the roadway, the last titled owner and any security interest holders are notified. If neither the owner nor security interest holder takes action to recover the vehicle within a specific period of time, the police authority or hired private entity sells the vehicle at auction. At that point, all security interests and penalties are released from the vehicle. The new owner brings their abandoned vehicle sales receipt as proof of ownership and you process the new title and registration normally, using the ownership transfer reason of "Possessory Lien".
