For vehicles that do not have a VIN, leave the VIN field blank. To find the vehicle during future transactions, you must search using a unique identifier, such as the license plate. This is for small regular trailers and small semi-trailers only. All other vehicles must have a VIN.
If VIN decoding does not bring back the weight and list price of a vehicle, the user should contact the Property Valuation Division (PVD) to obtain the correct vehicle valuation information and either refresh the screen once PVD has updated the vehicle definition or manually enter the vehicle information provided by PVD if the user has appropriate authority.
When you add a vehicle during a title and registration transaction, the vehicle information pre-populates from NADA if the VIN is found through a process known as VIN decoding. If the vehicle is not found through VIN decoding, you can search similar vehicles to pre-populate vehicle information based on other vehicles based upon the VIN decoding subscription.
When you enter a short VIN on the prequalifier window, if there is only one VIN in the database that matches this short VIN, you will proceed directly to the transaction window with that VIN. You must verify that the VIN at the top of the window is the VIN you want. If it is not, start the transaction over again; this time enter the full VIN on the prequalifier window and add the vehicle to the database.
