Refunding Registration or Property Tax Fees

You can refund a registration for a vehicle that is sold and not replaced, and is therefore not used as a registration credit. The system will allow only one refund request per vehicle registration, will suspend the registration when the refund is issued, and will issue a refund only if:

The system may not allow a refund of either the registration fees or the property taxes in the following situations:

The system allows a refund of property taxes but not registration fees for eligible customers moving out of state.

To refund registration fees or property taxes
  1. On the VRT menu, select Registration Transactions > Refund Registration.

    The Refund Registration & Property Tax Prequalifier window appears.

  2. Enter the vehicle identification number or customer identification number.

    Tip: If you do not know the vehicle or customer identification number, click Vehicle Search or Customer Search to open the Search window and find the vehicle or customer you want.

  3. In the Received Date field, enter or select the date on which the original transaction occurred for which you are processing the refund.
  4. Select Select Ownership.
  5. Click Continue.

    When the vehicle or customer that you entered is identified, the Select Ownership window appears.

    Note: If you entered a partial identification number or if the vehicle or customer you entered is not found, the Search window appears. For more information, see Entering Information on a Prequalifier Window.

  6. Select the owner and vehicle combination you want and click Select.

    The Refund Registration & Property Tax window appears.

  7. Enter the vehicle refund information.

    Tip: For specific information about the individual fields on the window, press F1 in the window to open the online help or see the Refund Registration & Property Tax window.

  8. Click Commit and finish the transaction.

    MOVRS checks for errors. If you need help resolving errors, see Errors, Discretionary Edits, and Warnings. When all errors are resolved or if no errors are found, the refund request is submitted for approval.
